River Basin Science and Policy Center

The River Basin Science and Policy Center unites the vast and varied water resources expertise at the University of Georgia to further opportunities for interdisciplinary research, outreach, and education. The River Center focuses on the intersection between science and policy, and works to link these two arenas in a way that strengthens the effectiveness of both.

By providing timely and objective scientific information to policy makers, managers, and stakeholders the River Center promotes the development of sound public policy. The River Center works to establish a dialogue between those who need water resources information and the researchers at the University of Georgia to help ensure that decision makers have sound scientific information and that research efforts focus on the most critical questions.

Current projects include a research effort to determine the effects of recent legislation on the headwaters in the State of Georgia, and participation in Georgia's Comprehensive State Wide Water Planning process.

Several faculty members affiliated with the River Center are serving on the Advisory Committee which is co-directed by the Center's Policy Director, Laurie Fowler and Science Director, Ron Carroll. In addition, the River Center is working with the Vinson Odum School of Government to provide staff support for the water planning process.

Priorities, in addition to the previously mentioned efforts, include: research to support instream flow policies, forums to bring together stakeholders to discuss key water issues, the further development of outreach programs to help local jurisdictions meet water resources regulations, and the establishment of an on-line resource center for teachers.
