Appointment of Advisory Committee

  • The Advisory Committee will consist of the chairman and four faculty members. The chairman and two other member of the committee must be members of the Graduate Faculty.
  • The major professor must be a member of the Odum School of Ecology faculty (adjunct members may serve), and must be working in the student’s study area.
  • If co-major professors are appointed, a sixth member must be added with the majority being Graduate Faculty.

Program of Study
A preliminary program of study, developed by the major professor and the doctoral student and approved by a majority of the advisory committee, will be submitted to the graduate coordinator by the end of the student's first year of residence. The program of study should consist of 16 or more hours of 8000-level courses in addition to research, dissertation writing, and independent study.

The program of study for a student who bypasses the master's degree must contain 4 semester hours of UGA courses open only to graduate students in addition to 16 semester hours of 8000-level courses. Doctoral research (9000), independent study courses, and dissertation writing (9300) may not be counted in these 20 hours.

Comprehensive Examinations

  • A student must pass formal, comprehensive written and oral examinations before being admitted to candidacy for the degree. The student’s advisory committee administers these examinations.
  • The oral comprehensive examination is open to all members of the faculty and shall be announced by the Graduate School. The graduate coordinator must notify the Graduate School of the time and place of the examination at least two weeks before the date of the examination.

Dissertation Prospectus
Approval of the dissertation prospectus is required of at least four of the five committee members. Form should be submitted prior to candidacy.

Admission to Candidacy

  • The student is responsible for initiating an application for admission to candidacy so that it is filed with the dean of the Graduate School at least two full semesters before the date of graduation.
  • After admission to candidacy, a student must register for at least two additional semesters and a total minimum of ten hours of dissertation or other appropriate graduate credit. A student must register for a minimum of three hours of credit in any semester when using University facilities, and/or faculty or staff time.

Application for Graduation
An application for graduation must be filed with the Graduate School no later than Friday of the second full week (the first full week for summer) of classes in the semester of the anticipated graduation date. This form must be filed directly with the Graduation Office in the Graduate School.

Dissertation Approval and Defense

  • When the major professor is satisfied with the completed dissertation, he or she will certify that it has his or her approval and is ready to be read. The graduate coordinator must notify the Graduate School at least two weeks prior to the defense.
  • The defense of the dissertation will be chaired by the student's major professor and attended by all members of the advisory committee for the entire examination period.

Submitting the Dissertation

  • One complete formatted copy of the dissertation must be electronically submitted to the Graduate School for a format check no later that four weeks prior to graduation.
  • The Graduate School must receive the Final Defense Approval form and an electronic submission of the corrected dissertation no later than two weeks prior to graduation.

Printing and Binding of Dissertation

  • The Odum School of Ecology requires an official hard bound copy of the dissertation on 100% cotton paper. Payment (cash or check) must be made prior to submission of the Approval Form to the Graduate School. Please contact the Ecology Graduate Program Office for payment.
  • Personal copies can be obtained through the Tate Student Center's Print and Copy Services. A request form can be found on their website at http://www.uga.edu/stuact/facilities-services/electronicdissrequest.pdf.
