Appointment of Advisory Committee
The committee will consist of a major professor, as chairman, and two additional members. The major professor and at least one of the other members of the committee must be members or provisional members of the graduate faculty. If co-major professors are appointed, a fourth member must be added with the majority being Graduate Faculty.

Program of Study
A student must complete a program of study, which constitutes a logical whole. Master of Science degrees require a minimum of 30 semester hours consisting of at least 12 semester hours of course work open only to graduate students (exclusive of 7000 and 7300). A maximum of 6 hours of 7000 may be applied toward the minimum of 30 hours. A minimum of 3 hours of 7300 must be listed on the program of study.

Transfer of Credit
If graduate credit earned at an accredited institution constitutes a logical part of the student's program, transfer of credit may be allowed when recommended by the student's major professor, advisory committee, graduate coordinator, and when approved by the dean of the Graduate School. Such transfer of credit cannot exceed nine semester hours and must fall within the time limit of the degree. No grade below a B may be transferred.

Application for Graduation
An application for graduation must be filed with the Graduate School no later than Friday of the second full week (the first full week for summer) of classes in the semester of the anticipated graduation date. This form must be filed directly with the Graduation Office in the Graduate School.

Thesis Approval and Defense
The major professor, who will distribute copies to the remaining members of the advisory committee and schedule a final examination, must approve the thesis. One complete formatted copy of the thesis must be electronically submitted to the Graduate School no later than four weeks prior to graduation for a format check. A candidate must register for at least three semester hours of thesis under the course number 7300.

Submitting the Thesis
The Graduate School must receive the Final Defense Approval form and an electronic submission of the corrected dissertation no later than two weeks prior to graduation.

Printing and Binding of Thesis

  • The Odum School of Ecology requires an official hard bound copy of the dissertation on 100% cotton paper. Payment (cash or check) must be made prior to submission of the Approval Form to the Graduate School. Please contact the Ecology Graduate Program Office for payment.
  • Personal copies can be obtained through the Tate Student Center's Print and Copy Services. A request form can be found on their website at http://www.uga.edu/stuact/facilities-services/electronicdissrequest.pdf.
