Membership and Obligations

There are three categories of faculty membership in the Odum School of Ecology: Regular, Adjunct and Courtesy.

The term of membership for all Adjunct and Courtesy faculty members shall be three years. After three years, membership may be renewed upon 1) request by the individual faculty member and 2) approval by a majority vote of the faculty.

Only Regular faculty members will vote on matters pertaining to the appointment, promotion, and tenure of other Regular faculty. Regular, Adjunct and Courtesy faculty members will vote on appointment and promotion of Adjunct and Courtesy faculty.

Regular, Adjunct and Courtesy faculty members involved in teaching ecology courses will vote on the changes in the ecology curriculum and other teaching matters. The Odum School may be organized into subunits called Program Faculties, which serve a special purpose or give a focus to Odum School programs. The number of Program Faculties within the Odum School is not fixed. New Program Faculties will be approved by vote of the Regular, Adjunct and Courtesy faculty members in a regular meeting. Program Faculties will organize themselves, set their own rules, and elect their own officers; however, any proposal by such a Program faculty to initiate a new course or degree program must be approved by the Odum School Executive Committee before being submitted elsewhere.

Two program faculties are currently recognized: The Faculty of Conservation and Sustainable Development is concerned with teaching and research in the conservation and sustainable development masters and certificate programs. The Faculty of Savannah River Ecology Laboratory carries out teaching, research and service at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory.

The Regular faculty will be invited to and expected to participate in faculty meetings. The Director will chair the meeting and the order of the meeting will follow Robert's Rules. Minutes of each meeting will be kept and copies of the minutes will be made available to all faculty members by the Director. Decisions will be made by a simple majority of those present. When possible, the Director will set the faculty meeting dates one term in advance and will send a reminder notice two weeks in advance of each meeting. The reminder notice will include an agenda. Faculty may add items to the agenda at any time. At these meetings the faculty will approve the minutes of the last meeting and will hear reports from the standing committees and the Director and will carry out any other business it chooses.

Regular faculty are those tenure-track faculty and on-campus, non-provisional research-rank faculty who receive their salary from the Odum School of Ecology. Regular faculty are responsible for the teaching, research and service activities of the Odum School.

Adjunct and Courtesy faculty are elected by the Regular faculty of the Odum School to participate in the teaching and research programs of the Odum School of Ecology.

Courtesy faculty are defined as faculty who are permanent University of Georgia employees. Courtesy faculty members will be chosen from those tenure-track faculty in other schools and departments of the University of Georgia who have expressed an interest in participating in our programs. Courtesy faculty appointments in the Odum School of Ecology will be at the same rank as the rank already held by the individuals in their home units. For example, an associate professor can be appointed as a courtesy associate professor.

Adjunct faculty are defined as faculty who are not University of Georgia employees.

Adjunct faculty members will be chosen from those individuals in federal, state, private agencies or non-governmental organizations. Individuals who already have appointments as Adjunct faculty or appointments in the Research or Public Service ranks of any unit of the University of Georgia will be eligible for election as Adjunct faculty members of the Odum School of Ecology.   Adjunct faculty involved in instructional duties are authorized to teach designated academic courses with the Director's approval.   Adjunct faculty cannot earn tenure and all individuals in this category are in non-tenure track positions.
