Preliminary study results suggest COVID-19 outbreaks likely on campuses

An Aug. 19 article by Lee Shearer in the Athens Banner Herald, “Study says ‘explosive localized outbreaks’ expected when classes start at universities like UGA,” reports on the preliminary results of a study by Distinguished Research Prof. John Drake.

Drake, the director of the UGA Center for the Ecology of Infectious Diseases, developed a model of COVID-19 transmission on a university campus that takes into account intervention strategies like surveillance testing, social distancing, and the use of face coverings.

The paper, “Scenario analysis for an outbreak of COVID-19 on a university campus,” is posted on GitHub.
